The middle letter of 35a is also the the third letter of 32d

I think it’s RESPITE, meaning delay, and to re-spite, means again to thwart, I.e. to thwart again.
So the other one is LOPE, meaning to run. It’s an anagram (out) of Pole, who would be a foreigner
