Very clever to get so much thematic material into the grid and clues -- but, 18D's "thematic word" does not quite work, does it?

I suppose 'leader (or chief) of Tobago' would have been more appropriate.

Well, the thematic word in the clue has 7 letters but the (insert 3rd word of the book title) has only 6 letters.

Thanks, Buddy. I see what you mean now - I'm so used to ignoring that aspect (possessive or 'is') in many clues that I just blanked it out. Yes, other phrasing would have been better.

Excellent puzzle from Vismut, to whom my thanks. The “Easter Eggs” provided by the non-redundant elements of the down clues were a remarkable jeu d’esprit, so I won’t quibble about 18 - but I get the point.

However, I am being a bear of very little brain anent the final clause of the preamble. I know what the object is but I can’t see the “central character” to turn. There is an obvious candidate in the silvered line but it’s just off-centre. Any help towards enlightenment would be appreciated.
