From 24/26 I worked out the theme, but it's what goes over, not under. And the words should appear when you look at the grid.

well I have thought about what you say, Pendragon, but unless I have the theme totally wrong the 24/26 element definitely goes under.... and I still have TPOITLOV and something like PHAMEDU for my last two theme words !

I certainly had strange strings like yours, but they resolved themselves when I looked at the grid. Are you sure the words aren't vertical? For instance, I wonder whether the ME is not redundant (if it's 14A) as is the D if it precedes the U, and the U is part of a vertical word? It's difficult without spilling the beans (and that's not a clue)!

Prospero, you have too many ignored letters. The Greek god is not Zeus, and the abbreviation of Democrat is not D, for a start

yes, thank you both - I had sorted out the Greek god and got rid of other letters. I now have 7 theme words (+7d). I believe the 8th must be in column 11 or 13 ... but am sure I have the grid right anyway.

There's one in the column beginning 6D certainly

Hello all, new to doing these particular puzzles, first time post. I'm pleased to have worked my way through almost to completion but am completely stuck on 27d (Bovid raised one of two inside a cage). Would appreciate a small hint!

The animal (raised) is the last 3 letters and the 'cage' is skeletal.
