Thanks Quisling. Ref 1a, I'm not sure how 'leader' in the clue is working. I don't it refers to the first letter of captured, because that's what 'initially' is doing, which is why I thought I was looking for a word meaning 'tribal leader'.
Also, 'tribal' seems wrong to mean 'Dan', 'tribe' would be better.

Dan was the leader of the tribe. That’s his name. So tribal leader looks fine to me.

Ah I see, Dan the person not Dan one of the 12 tribes is the definition.
