Given the generosity of the prizes for this particular Spectator puzzle, I do hope that solutions aren't revealed here. I don't submit, but it must be galling for those that do to see solutions being bandied about. No apologies for sounding priggish.

The word to be highlighted, is it the rather obvious appearance with 6 letters in the top row ? Logically, I would prefer it to be the 4 letter equivalent but can't locate it elsewhere ...

I started this puzzle late as I was away for a few days.
A few words I had to check in Chambers as they were new to me (43d 76d 20a)
I still have a few gaps on NE corner but won't ask for help yet.
I have solved the 4-letter theme word but cannot locate it yet.

Have now completed the grid and found the 4-letter well hidden. Enjoyable crossword
