44d: Rock formation shaking, but with vibration removed (7)

The answer looks like AQUIFER - a type of rock formation - but I don’t fully understand the parsing. I’m guessing it’s based on AQUIVER (shaking) from which the V (presumably an abbreviation for VIBRATION) has been removed - but where does the F come from? Please can anyone explain?

Sorry, Tyke 51 - I don't understand. And in any case, that doesn't fit with the intersecting letters. Please can you explain how you arrived at that suggestion?

V requires a vibration of the vocal chords , when you pronounce "f" it doesn't ?

Thanks. That's the most convincing explanation so far!

Although there are letters other than "f" that don't vibrate , but inserting them doesn't give you a rock formation !!

I think cryptastic is spot on. The letter V is the voiced version of the unvoiced letter F, and voiced, in phonetic terms, means uttered with a vibration. So if you unvoice, I.e. remove the vibration, from “aquiver” you get “aquifer”. An extremely subtle clue, imho.

Other pairs, voiced and unvoiced, are b and p, z and s, d and t, g and k. But I won’t expect to see the device used again in a hurry!
