Could anyone give me a subtle hint for the top left corner? I've completed the rest fairly steadily but need a toe-hold here.. I don't have 1a or 1d.. or 2 or 9 so am short on crossers to help. I'm sure some are really obvious but not seeing it. Thanks!

2 D is a type of do you might have at home, with a single letter inserted to give the defn - equivalence.

1A is a 4 letter possessive version of a three letter Greek letter inside an old 3 letter word for a drunk. Defn is a type of philosopher.

I'm also struck on 1D and 9A

1d. is a double definition. Charger as in something you might serve food on perhaps
9a. Day is the actress and the definition is primate

Thanks, Jono. I got 9 just after posting(!) and saw 1d but "charger" seemed a bit of a stretch.
Can't parse 28A, and still can't get
16&17D and 21&27A.
Hints welcome

28 parses as 1-3 (a term for FBI agents - coincidentally it appears in today’s ‘Speedy’) inside 3 letters for group.
16d def is the first four words. 3 letters reversed for airline’s, then an anagram.
17d. an anagram.
21. 6 letter author missing first two letters. Def is sack
27. One letter from ‘ultimately the’’ and 3 letters for tin all inside 4 letter word for herb (I didn’t know this). Def is VIPs team.

I enjoyed that! Got over half done all by myself 😇. Thanks as always with everyone’s helpful hints. Seems I have a similar vocabulary to Brummie, some nice words. Agreed 3d is a good one.

Only one left to parse, 23d. I have a 4 letter word with an n added giving a very small thing found inside all living things. But don’t know how John fits?
