A good puzzle, but I’m struggling with the highlighting- can anyone give me a hint am I looking for a straight line highlight? Or is it 9 cells I need to find?

A straight line in the usual place - it's not in Chambers because it's an invented word / meme (change one letter of a medical condition).

I had the same problem, but that nice Mr Wiki told me all I needed to know. What lakrs!

As I type I think I have seen 9d metres.
That makes 14a bete.
How does bete work ? Assuming I am correct of course.

Yes and b..e is the 1st letters of the words ...then you do the change for the grid enrtry

Thanks to Eclogue. Quite gentle and I confess that I rapidly ignored the device in the down clues as the “condition” in the across clues became clear early on - in fact with my first across entry. A shame, really, given the work put into that aspect of the puzzle by the setter.

My initial reaction was that this was going to be a slog, but it turned out to be a delightful puzzle. Thanks to Eclogue.

Anybody else having to dismiss the cookies acknowledgement with virtually every navigation?
