Here I am again as I am finding the clues difficult from the outset today.
Help please with 1a: without leader, quiet periods in many bases (8) there maybe a misprint in the definition.
Also 17d: ruse by bishops sadly permits see to be captured (9) I suspect the misprint is in the first word of this one. No letters for either yet…unless 1a begins O and 17d ends S.
See how tentative I am…thank you all

You are correct with your letters for 1a, result is a term for frequently. Quiet could be gentle (without leader).
17d involves an anagram with a 2 letter look! in. Not the most usual one. The result is to do with bishops. Misprint as suspected.

Hi jogamel
I have 1a beginning with O and needs a letter changed in definition (last 3 words), as does 17d, with letter changed as you state, in 1st word but ends in M not S.

Sorry, I misread your post as you having 2 letters (first and last) for 1a. 17d ends in M.

Thank you both! I was way off with 1a but one letter out with 17d. Onwards…

You're welcome. This is a really good puzzle, one of Ifor's best but not the easiest.

It is quite a knotty one. I have a couple still to resolve and a few more misprints to find but they are looking intriguing!

Agree with muraria. An excellent puzzle, and accuracy with the misprints is essential to make the endgame smooth sailing. Ifor is always interesting, with impeccable clueing, and this was less GWIT than can be the case. Enjoyed it

I agree with all the praise - but technically shouldn't there be 15 lines?

Indeed, Cockie. I did wonder why that wasn’t addressed. Presumably because it would lead to two equally valid solutions, one a mirror image of the other. Shark had a broadly similar puzzle in the Magpie a while ago which took the other approach and allowed both
