I have been doing Private Eye Prize crossword for 15+ years. Since Covid, they accept entries by email only. Does anyone know exactly how a winner is selected? Private Eye says " £100 prize to first correct solution opened on .........date" Does this mean the first email opened, ie the most recent email received into their email box? If this is the case, early entries to Private Eye are completely pointless and in fact to win you would have to time the sending of your email to the absolute last minute. i have written to Private Eye for an explanation of the winner selection process but received a very ambiguous reply. Can anyone help please?

Hi Mickey - pure speculation but I imagine they didn’t get round to changing their wording and just pick one out randomly. Otherwise, yes, it would be ridiculously unfair. Strange that they haven’t replied to you. Perhaps ring their “cancellations” number to get some attention?

Alternatively there has been a hostile takeover by the Grauniad….
