I've got a full grid and 3 letters of all the coded entries, except one where I have 5. I've managed Playfairs before but I'm having trouble working out the missing letters in this one. Is there an online tool that helps? I've tried a couple but with no success as yet.

This one usually works well (and it did this time too):

and once you have the keyword this encodes/decodes easily:

I dislike playfair puzzles because they humbly remind me that I'm not as clever as I like to think. Same applies to printer's devilry. 😪 I would put both into room 101.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how the codeword should be deduced from the answer to normal clues? It all seems a bit vague.

The rubric is perhaps not totally clear. The plaintext answers to the clues in *italics* (which are nevertheless 'normal' clues in the sense of being definition and wordplay in either order), together with the corresponding checked letters in their ciphertext entries in the diagram, are enough information to deduce the codeword. If you want to do this manually, note that if the same letter appears in a plaintext digraph and in its enciphered digraph, then both letters of the plaintext appear in either the same row or the same column of the Playfair square. Alternatively (and more easily), enter the plaintext and ciphertext digraphs which you have into a web-based Playfair codeword finder.

I'll try that again: If you want to find the codeword manually, note that if the second letter of a plaintext digraph is the same as the first letter of its enciphered digraph (e. g. XY encodes as YZ), then a row (or column) of the Playfair square reads XYZ??, or ?XYZ?, or ??XYZ, or Z??XY or YZ??X.
