I took refuge here from the latest Listener. Thank you, Chalicea for a much gentler experience, albeit not without a degree of challenge and a fascinating (to me, at least) theme. Now get them loins girt, Jack and back to the Listener…. Or maybe wait for tomorrow’s EV first?….

I switched from the Listener too. I enjoyed this - after boiling my brain on that one this was a relief.

Probably not going back to the Listener though! EV, Speccy and Azed then hmmm maybe....

I'm afraid the 'trademarks' took the edge off my enjoyment! Still, I liked some of the clues, especially as they were (to me) a little harder than usual.

Maybe I was suckered because it made me recall climbing on the best possible rock in the North West of Scotland, Torridonian sandstone. Perfect climbing but so much to think about. Sandstone laid down in lifeless deserts created from the erosion of lifeless mountain ranges from eons past: as Hutton said, “no vestige of a beginning: no prospect of an end.”

Thanks, JackAubrey. I enjoyed your obvious enjoyment of the Scottish rock, and liked pondering over the endlessness of it.

Add me to the list of those that came here as temporary refuge from the Listener:-)

Not a subject I know much about (another one!) but I still found it very entertaining and it was easy to find the highlighted word on Google:-)

Thanks to Chalicea 👍

Hello!

This was a nice easy one, but one for one little problem - I cannot parse 13A. I can see how the caper might be involved in the wordplay, and there might be a homophone somewhere, but it's driving me nuts. Help!!!

Thanks,
Suzy

I'd love help parsing 28a and 38a.
For extra letter!

28a was one of my last, Lumen. A three letter word for outstanding, then a three letter archaic word for a poem (which includes the extra letter), then a single letter for about, to give a word meaning sloth.

Suzy, I think 'canned' is a term for having had a little too much beer and the rest is from the radio operator's alphabet minus a letter.
