I'm truly stuck on the last one:
A place Quail dreams of ruin and potatoes ultimately.
_ A _ S

It seems very clever, with a reference perhaps to Dan Quayle's famous misspelling of 'potatoes' all those years ago, but I just can't get it.
Any help much appreciated
Thanks
Bella

I think it’s Mars. Mar, ruin + S (last letter of potatoes ). A reference to Douglas Quail in Philip Dick’s novel

Thanks so much Quisling. Gosh, the TLS setters do love their obscure literary references and, alas, Philip Dick has never been on my to-read list!
Have a lovely day
