Really enjoyable puzzle - just need a hint to get me over the line. 19D former governor has trouble in court (6). I have.?ai?e? And I think word play generates extra letter.

Think I know where I'm heading, but am stumped by this one

A common (in crosswords) theee-letter word for 'trouble' goes inside a less common (but not unheard of) three=letter word for former governor (and it's not Aga), giving you a very famous court...

It's a proper noun. 'Trouble' (3) in 'former governor'

I've been trying to work out the parsing of this for the best part of an hour and I've just about reached breaking point!

5d - Evergreen singer almost entirely ignored in awards (7)

My answer is a synonym for "awards" (as a verb) from an 8 letter "evergreen" minus "I".

I'm pretty sure there's also an extra "I" (unless that's the "I" from "evergreen") generated by the wordplay but am at a loss as to understand how that results from "singer almost entirely ignored" which makes me wonder if I've got it all wrong.

....I think the "singer" is someone owning up but I just can't get over the line!

It's 6d, brendan - yes, the 'i' comes out of the 7 letter evergreen and the singer really is 'almost entirely ignored' because only the 's' remains (def 'awards').

Thanks Drxx,

Just to clarify, are you saying that "singer almost entirely ignored" = S(inger) and has nothing to do with 'confessor'?

If the former, I would have thought that "almost ......" would mean (singe)R not the other way round.

Yes, that's it brendan - I think the s(inger) only just makes an entrance before being ignored.

A few similar clue twists in the puzzle made it quite fun (I think).
