21a - leaves? I thought you ate the other bit!
I can’t see the “young birds (not large)” in 1a.

Well I seem to have the same answer for 16a and the first part of 21a - surely that can't be right? Neither clue makes much sense with these answers either! Can anyone enlighten me please?

Yes agreed thought it was brilliant and finishing it was very satisfying 17a 21a favourites also 19d 26a.

Ianwil, I had a similar thought, but the leaves are edible I’m told.
The birds in 1a are the last three letters (without L).

Neville, from what you’ve said you have the correct answers. In 16 look for final letters. For 21 look ‘above’ (literally)

Wavelength thing as my fastest solve that I can remember BUT I still can't work out where the first four letters of the second word in 1a come from .

I thought that was quite fun, while it lasted, but the clueing for 5d is very loose, needed most of the crossers to solve it.
