I parse the first bit as something you'd put on a horse and the last bit as 'stated' for a synonym of 'expressed'. Which works well and gives a sensible answer.

...but one that doesn't fit in the grid, even though I am sure all the crossers are correct! Am I just having a slow Sunday?

The first four letters are correct and remaining six are a word that means expressed . Are your crossers from 25d,18d and 26 correct?

Yep, I think so! So the second letter of the express synonym is an E. (From oN bOmB aLlEy in 25d)

But my synonym has T as the second letter. Which, to /state/ the obvious, isn't E!

Noble is correct so your need another word for expressed. I can see this clue might make you express your fury .
