Help!

Where am I going wrong?

1D I have CARA_AP_AR_ES
16D I have QUIM_
20D I have TR_BO_ET

What I do not have is any idea!

1d: the P is incorrect
16d: the M is incorrect
20d: R and _ should be reversed - T_RB, etc.

I've seen a variant spelling of 1d; 16d relates to an American term but the solution is a common word.

Thank you Geeker.

On 22, in my defence, N----G------ is not in Chambers but P----G------ is, and seems to fit perfectly 'never had a baby'!

With your help I am done - thank you!

Great fun, thanks as usual for sharing. I was held up with a P in 1d too.
Three of the theme words were new to me and it was nice to look up their etymology.
Pu pu platter in the preamble was new to me too! The photos that appeared online made me feel very hungry.

1ac is common in the UK, or was when I lived there.
