Has to be PANTO though I have no idea what "or vessel, at first" leads to or why it should endorse the PANTO. In light of the "not a word = crickets" shennanigans last week I'm now not sure I care.

Can anyone help?

Vessel = Pan
At = To (in Chambers)

I thought it might be pan.
And I suppose "at" can be a synonym of "to"
As in "he pointed at the Crossword Setter" = "he pointed to the crossword setter" and pulled a face.

The clue is “Traditional entertainment FOR vessel, at first”.
So I read this as “for” = TO, preceded by (at first) PAN (vessel).
Not sure it’s any better but it explains ‘first’.
