Mirror Cryptic Crossword Answer is IVY

I'm stuck with why the answer to the following clue is "IVY"
"backtrack, repeatedly refusing to hold book on quiet bridge".

Apologies if it's obvious but I'm struggling...

Hi micky, as far as I can tell the answer should be PONTOON. Definition is bridge, and it's NO + OT + NO + P (repeated refusal, (no) (no) and quiet (p) holding book (OT) old testament. Backtracking indicates reversal.

No idea where IVY comes in!

I have seen the answer shown as IVY elsewhere which makes nonsense if the letter count is shown in the crossword as 7
