Morning all,
The challenge is to find ”single word indicators for single letters” for the entire alphabet. So, for example, “midnight” -> “G”. Hyphenated words, or two word expressions, if they have a strong association (like the “apple core” example below), are also fine.

Here are some I have already. Feel free to suggest better ones / alternatives. I’ll sum up on Friday afternoon.

* I’m not sure this would be fair, given you need to mentally insert the apostrophe as well as splitting the word. What do you think?

N - nightcap, probably only works with a down clue
U - upstart

D - head-butt?

J - jump-start

B - bump-start

Haha, no problem, Brendan. I suppose “Head-butt” could be D or B.
I also see “butthead” (B) and “butt-end” (T) in Chambers

Continuing the mid theme,

I = midpoint
P = midshipman
T = midwestern

That’s enough mids for now , Ed.

A = second-rate

O = photo-finish
L = legend
Y = happy ending

C - cooktop
D - rearguard
E - dovetail, endgame

There are so many heads: looking at ones you don’t have:

A = airhead
B = bighead
C = crackhead, clubhead
H = hothead
