@ Mattrom

I am sorry that the ads are giving you a problem with updating the wordlists and thank-you for the work you do. If I am moderating I always use them. It would certainly be nice not to have have words repeated which have appeared in the last couple of years but that would be tough to do. However the list would be shorter and would fit into one posting. I would certainly be happy to help.
Feedback from some more participants would be good. If the majority feel that we can dispense with the lists then I would go with the flow.

I think it would be good to keep the lists to avoid repetition of words and also as a historic record.

Perhaps we could ask Norah to ask Ash why ads are appearing in the middle of posts. This does seem a little invasive if it’s getting in the way of the normal running of things.

Like Dorrien, I’m happy to help if list maintenance is becoming a burden. Also Dorrien’s suggestion of publishing lists with just words from the previous couple of years, so say the last 100 words from each competition, might be a way of keeping them shorter and more easily managed.

I know we`re all grateful for the effort you put in to keep the `lists` up to date. I`ve often thought of a word only to see it has already been used, so I think the lists are needed. If the `ads` problem is making your task too onerous perhaps someone, who is not so afflicted, help out?

Re: My #48

I think the last part is ambiguous!

I would be in favour of keeping the lists, if possible. However, I wouldn't want it to be a chore for anyone that's willing and able to do so.

I agree. Lists are essential. Any accessible format is OK - bit not everybody has office.
Have emailed Norah about the intrusive advertising . The more people let her know the better.

Thanks for your replies, and the kind words (Is that an Oxford comma, or not?)
Jono, I did contact Norah about the ads in the July/August lists, who passed it on to Ash. He replied that there was nothing he could do about them, and "It's a long page to be fair - they are automatic and we don't have a huge amount of control over long posts like this”.
I am mindful of the fact that the site we all value probably wouldn't exist without ads.

So far, the idea of leaving the first post for the ad, and putting the list in the next post has worked.
I like the idea of a more recent word list, though it would be some work to compile.
However, the fact that it is bugging me (in more ways than one), means that it is time to quit. There are some errors in the last (A-L) list which I will correct in an update, say next week?
So, will someone put their hand up for the job, or could it be left to whoever feels like doing it?

Mattrom, yes it is an Oxford comma.
Dumb question, but is it possible to retain your original list(s),
and add a new list.? Obviously only 3 words are being added per week, but the list will grow and require alphabetic sorting weekly. I presume the list is merely held on your home computer and cut and pasted periodically?
We’re prepared to give it a go. Ask Norah for our email address and we can chat.

Hi SS (Chris),
Before this month, I've C&P'd from the lists on this site, as I felt I should stick to the format I inherited.
The September list is copied from my Google spreadsheet. This is easier, as I can just add the words at the end, and press 'Sort'. It does mean that the first letters of the words are not aligned, but perhaps that doesn't matter.

I'll ask Norah for your email, then I can pass the sheet on to you. In view of the length of the lists, starting a new one could be a good idea. Thanks for your offer.

Just a thought, but we could add a link to the preamble of each competition to a dropbox or google drive file that was regularly maintained. This would circumvent the need to post updates as separate threads.

Here's a test using a file I created from the list...
