Wallop is a slang word for beer. Add the first letters of e(very) d(rinker) and you get the answer, meaning "did make a hit"

wallop is an old slang word for beer. a brewer called codd made an inferior brew, hence coddswallop...

Wikipedia states that explanation is just "folk etymology" ! (not proven about Hiram Codd)

We have on the kitchen windowsill a Codd's bottle that we dug up in the garden. It's quite interesting. It was seqaed by a glass ball in the swollen neck. You got at the contents (probably a soft drink rather than beer) by pushing the ball down with a stick. See the link, for instance:

We dug up a couple of codd-neck bottles when we moved into our present house. I gave one away and the other is also on a window ledge. It has Castleford at the bottom

Ps - is “folk etymology” not just another expression for coddswallop …. 😉
