Thank you, I was led up the garden path by putting in an alternative to creditors - debtees - which fitted the crossers but made no sense of the clue, but got it now, thanks for settling the issue.

Thanks Malone - that should have been obvious even to me.
Maybe this next one is less so:
27/3 Pop off and defile a street.
P?A? ?W?Y
Almost certainly PASS AWAY, means to die or, as the clue has it, pop off.
I see A WAY could be a street, but relationship between 'defile' and 'pass' escapes me. Can you help please?

In geography, a defile is a narrow pass or gorge between mountains or hills.

JohnT, Chambers gives one definition of Defile as 'a long narrow pass...'so that seems fine.
