Smithax - I think the maximum is less than 48. Without giving away anything, it's possible that there are no duplicates between across and down numbers.

Not sure how to start, because I don't know whether, for example, "XY" means:

- X*Y

or

- X*10 + Y

It means the first of those, treat them all as equations

Thank you Smithsax, that indeed put me on the right track. I have most of the clue numbers now, cheers.

Cruciluci @32, HUH in the down clues quickly rules out your second idea

Finished this last night and really enjoyed the experience despite my rocky start. I ended up essentially solving it twice because I was worried I'd made a fatal mistake at some point; it turned out it was a relatively minor error and essentially all of my original work had been correct, so I did waste quite a lot of time, but it did at least give me confidence I was on the right track. Everything slotted into the grid nicely.

I must say I'm looking forward to getting back to words this week, though!

Love attempting the numericals but this one is maddening. Cannot find my error, can someone let me know if U and R are both odd. Think this might be where I am going wrong.

I have spent quite a lot of time over this, but started working out the clue numbers at first as suggested. This gave me most of the values for A to Z. I am now stuck on 4d which gives me 8 digits: 4 digit numerator, solidus and 3 digit denominator. I have the corresponding down clue 22d. I’m also stuck on 2 across clues at either end of the central line: 1 digit, solidus and 2 digits, and 2 digits, solidus and 1 digit. I cannot see where I have gone wrong - so near and yet so far. Everything else seems to work out. Any help from anyone?

What you have sounds right, diver. For 4d, you need to remember your algebra: a + b/c is the same as (ac + b)/c.

And on the central row, all fractions need to be reduced to their lowest terms. So if you had 26/14, it would become 13/7. Hope that might help
