With one vote to come we have an eight-way tie. Climactic indeed.

check that, spike's 22/25 are tweaks of the same clue so in fact we have a leader with one vote to go.

We have a tie at the top with mattrom's 8 and spike's 22/25. Prior to the voting I had picked spike's clue as my favorite, so spike gets the tie-breaker. Well done spike, tough luck mattrom and thanks to all for playing.

I see why spike tweaked his clue. It's a great idea that I almost went for, but it doesn't quite work for me either way round. "Appearances" doesn't quite work for the surface, but "appearance" doesn't give both first letters for me. Very nice try, though!
