I don't see how the ones at the bottom can be included in the highlighting of eight symbols (but the two in line above seem OK to me).

I've only just started this but already it seem I have a few clues where the answer appears too long for the number of cells - is this likely a case of me getting the wrong answers or should I carry on and all will become clear?

I've been 'carrying on' since Sunday but the final step is still beyond me. I have solved all the clues and have the 4 thematic entries. I am assuming that a letter is removed from each of the 5 answers which are too long for their cells and added to the thematic down entry to create an element found in that. I can make that work for the eighth row but nowhere else. As usual I am probably over-complicating things.

No letters are removed from those 5 answers. The "2 letters that share the same cell" are not in the down thematic entry.
