apologies to all concerned

Quite a difficult word to clue, I think, with a limited range of definitions, to say the least, but there were some great contributions and I counted 8 different species in all!

7 different clues gained votes from 10 voters, and the winner only collected 2 votes, so it was certainly an open contest.

Votes for jono @8, mattrom @9, paul @11 and fieryjack @13 were pipped by a three-way tie at the top between jono @12, tyke51 @15 and jono (again) @17, each with two votes. I narrowed it down to the last two, as each received an honorable mention from chrise. As I wasn’t 100% sure about jono’s hidden definition, which you don’t often see and which seemed like an extra step too far, I decided to plump for tyke’s succinct offering:
