Hi Chris,

18d - I think it's the first 3 letters of "mum's brothers" then 4 letter "having (what's) left" as in the remainder/extra.

Chris, I've just checked Chambers and "left" is given as a definition under the last 4 letters of 18d.

Solved but can't parse 16a and 6d
16a I've got the roly poly dessert part but can't see where the first six letters come from.
6d I've got the other European but can't see the original European.

Loubylou... It's a pretty convoluted solution imo. 3-letter abbreviation for Norway, followed by the next word in the clue with the final letter removed and replaced by a European.

16A Most of the first word is a princess in Greek mythology.

Hi Loubyloo,

16a - the first 6 letters are a "beautiful princess" from Greek fable - if you Google "princess followed by the first 6 letters you'll see it.

6d - 3 letter "Norway" + "THE" with the E(uropean) replaced by "another" European.

Thanks all. I'd never heard of that Princess . Happy with 6d now -don't think I'd have got it if I 'd sat here all day.

Thanks again Brendan. As soon as I closed my eyes those mischievous apparitions jumped out of their English cooker with their Russian pancakes. It was a great clue though I was rather clueless, distracted by Greek possibilities.

Well this was easy (another 45 minute solve) even though I couldn't parse a few of them! I got them all right though, had to come here for the parsing of

9A (forgot the first word can mean ornate e.g. prose)
16A (forgot abut the Princess but I think I have heard of her before)
19D (didn't know those 2 from the alphabet), answer was only thing that fitted though
23A (did not know the pancakes, answer was only thing that fitted and I saw the cookers and good old parts).

I was not happy with 3D being 2, 5 either

I can't really see how to parse 15D though.
