21a: AUSTRINGER U & R outside

Have only looked at the instructions so far, which seem a little daunting - how do you know which letters are superfluous?

By the difference in the definition part and the cryptic part which describes the letters to go into the grid

Now for another play with the rest of it!

I enjoyed this puzzle - didn't get round to starting it until today, but must admit it's taken me most of the day!

I am down to my last one but struggling with the definition. It's 27d - I am assuming that it is TOTING, with the N dropping out. If so, how does the cryptic part work?
