Simon. For 31 I had the final letters of 6th/7th words then a 3 letter geographical feature then the associate.

Jordan, for 27 look at the next word, after the answer, in chambers - that will resolve your "ambiguity".

I have to say that I did not/do not like this crossword. For me there are too many unches for a start, some of the definitions are bordering on being unresolvable, without 100% conviction, by chambers and the radial at 44 has two very plausible solutions. This means that radials 37 and 38 each have FOUR unchecked letters and I still cannot parse 38 at all - even though it seems to have only one possible answer.

Gitto, he in the country,I.e. dialect usage, is the first letter, + four letters for extra + one letter for time. First two words, minus last letter (extra) is definition

Candledave, ref. post 6 and parsing of 38 - that completely sums up my beef about some of the clues. Warbler can be regarded as superfluous and leads to a definition (love warble) that cannot be 100% verified by chambers - and after all chambers is cited as the primary reference.

Not sure I follow gitto, the definition of “love warble” seems fine as another way of saying love song and that is in Chambers.

cd, I accept that, but given the number of unches I am unhappy that a synonym is used to verify the definition in chambers, a synonym that happens to be at the very end of the definition of the word in question - but my wife is at pains to continually remind me that I am "a grumpy old git".

My wife assures me that I was a miserable gitto when we first met in 1987. Apparently I am even worse now. I reckon you are in good company.
