I don't understand the "transport" part of the clue for 12. "Transport to a happier state" or something?

12 Parses as 1 , (3 inside 7). The 7 is a noun, syn of "transport".

Yeah I had the right answer. Never heard of that meaning for "transport" before, but I see chambers has it listed, and it's in thesaurus.com too.

I don't get that either. Also not sure where the second letter (E) comes from, assuming that the first is 50 and the 3rd/4th/5th are the soldiers. So I don't get the last 6 letters, or the transport bit.

I'm also stuck on 7d, which no-one else seems to have mentioned, so I must be missing something obvious! Is it like a rainforest or abruptly?? I thought it must be an anagram at first, but I can't find one.

7D is an anagram of 2 of the words in the clue, without the last letter of the 2nd word.
