A couple of parsing queries:

5a) Hearts sit back in Inverness ground - that's trouble in Edinburgh

ST*SH*E My solution is STISHIE, but am struggling to parse the "Inverness ground" relevance

5d) Swallow almost over meadow looks up for a kestrel ST*N*EL

I have STANYEL, but am similarly puzzled by the "swallow" relevance.

5d, swallow, accept, stand, "that's hard to swallow" hence STAN(d)

similarly puzzled by 5a

Although it's not in Chambers, Wiktionary gives SIE as "to sink, fall, drop" and ground can mean "to come to the ground." SIE is not specifically given as Scottish, but it's all I can see.

Remove the first letter (crown) from a word meaning deadly ("very harmful" seems like an understatement!)

For 5a I took ''groun'd' to mean an anagram of H(earts + SIT +''back in invernesS'' [for the 'S'] - with ''that's'' providinng the IE ending.

That works, drxx. It wasn't on my radar since I was fixated with "back" being a reversal indicator for "sit".
