It has got to be BAYONET SOCKET. The middle ET has to be 'edges of elegant'. How is the rest of the clue parsed?

A ‘steel’ is a bayonet, so a ‘steel covering’ might be a BAYONET SOCK, then the ET for edges of elegant, perhaps?

Steel is 'bayonet', covering is 'sock' and the FINAL 'ET' is 'edges of elegant'.
