OK I’m enjoying this one actually.

Anyone know if the themed letter pairs may occur more than once?

Crosbie, pretty sure no (I’ve nearly finished but held up in the NW corner). And it wouldn’t make sense given their ‘relative positioning’

Thank you Brendan for the hint re 10D. I am just beginning to recover from a very unpleasant experience of Covid and having tried several times to understand the instructions, I was just about to retire ungracefully. But 10D has got me started and has given me a possible theme and idea about the ‘arrangement’ within the grid. Think this is going to take some time…..

Yup, as per jono, all pairs unique, probably as expected.

Good Afternoon all, I’m a bit stumped on the theme of the two letters and their relative positioning despite having solved half a dozen or so now; any hints greatly appreciated

Also I definitely have the same 2 letters repeated in 2d and 66d

TIA

Hi GG.

Hard to advise without giving away the theme - but the two two-letter pairs you mentioned are definitely distinct, with no common letter.

Basically, answer, plus two-letter pair anywhere in clue, equals new word.

Position in grid disambiguates otherwise valid alternative solutions.

Thanks jono (and hotelwhisky) — had a couple of clues in the centre competing for the same possible pair of letters, but I’ve resolved it now!
