Think I have all the thematic stuff but a few gaps in SW, please help with 24d, Spring in revolt bringing in claim (6) Could have extra letter in clue.

Hi Lumen,

22d - 4 letter "claim" inside 2 letter "in revolt" - definition is "spring" (nothing to do with the season) - no extra letter.

Still no idea what '3! Leaves gutted' means, but I now see the definition, and that finally sorts all of the preamble. Thanks.

Stuck on first two paragraphs of preamble.
I have extra letters in groups of 3, 6, 4, 1, then 5, 5, 3.
Can anyone confirm, please ?
