I have spent more time trying to parse 12a than doing the whole crossword. No doubt blindingly obvious but not to me.
Character on staff wants opening curtailed. C?e? . Must be clef as in musical stuff but why?

Cleft would be the opening, curtailed means it's shortened, Clef.

Thanks but why does it say "Opening curtailed" -doesn't that mean the answer should be "left" ?

If anything is curtailed, it's cut short,surely? A cleft, in a cliff, say, is an opening. The word for opening, cleft, is curtailed...

Ah I see it now . Sometimes my denseness worries me. I was reading it as the opening letter of the answer had to be removed /
