I have what I think is the only answer that makes sense to 8A- Child writer to speak aloud at French school 5 letters

The interlocking words whose clues make sense give me;
? Y; ? E ?

I think it has to be the word for school What puzzles me is why it is Child writer. Aloud is key but what is crucial about a child here as opposed to any form of human who speaks in English

Thanks

Child writer = Lee (Lee Child), to speak = say, aloud (homophone) -> “Lee say”

I'm not sure but it might be ...

Child writer = LEE (Child)

Speak = SAY

Aloud = homophone so LEE SAY = LYCEE

My pronunciation "LIE SEE" obviously didn't help but I did get the answer, albeit making no sense of it!

I'm baffled partly by 15 Across - "Animals swallowing have too many units (7)". There would appear to be two options "VOLUMES" or "MODULES". Both have small animals but where do we get "swallowing" from "UM" or "DU"? I can see that "UM" can indicate a hesitation but surely "swallowing" would best be indicated by "GULP"?

As is so often the case I'm sure it's blatantly obvious! Perhaps Roman numerals - 500 U or U 1000?

Regards to all.

Modules, units, of a course, perhaps.

Thanks Malone,

MULES would appear to be the most suitable animal - "D'oh!"

Thanks all for the replies. I think that you, brendan, have the only explanation that fits the clues exactly I just hadn't thought of the word Child as referring to the writer Lee Child. I have heard of the Jack Reacher novels but had not heard of the name of the writer
