Down 25. A dull pain, bottom to top (4)

I have the letters E _ C _ Answer EACH ???

This fits and E (bottom letter of ACHE) goes to top but is that it?

Where's the Synonym - can someone explain, please ?

I assume the idea is that the definition is “a” for “each”. As in one person a side, three times a day, etc.

your suggestion is correct cbp...the final letter of achE moves to the front to make EACH

Good to see a FT inquiry. I often solve the FT cryptics, but FT puzzle threads seem exceedingly rare on this forum.

Agree with parsing, btw.

Yes thanks - I came to that conclusion - I just thought it was a bit tenuous.

Yes - I like the FT magazine XW because it's a cryptic/simple mixed - helps me a little bit sometimes. Can be a bit tenuous occasionally.

I enjoyed this one though from FT 580 :

6D Spooner's spotted cash for legal case (7)

A: Lawsuit (Saw Loot)
