2d - Add extra material to half of Wagner's Ring, perhaps (7). I think the answer is Lardner, but need help parsing?

There is/was a famous American writer called Ring Lardner. I think it's lard, add extra material to + (wag)Ner, half of Wagner.

Thanks, Malone. I had got as far as ner being half of Wagner, but didn't see why lard meant add extra material.

Thanks, Bassett. Collins says that 'lard' is 'to add extra material (in speech or writing); embellish'.

Thanks, Malone. I only knew of lard as a type of fat and didn't know it as a verb.

It rang only the faintest of bells when I stuck my answer in earlier - but I checked after your query!
