A pleasant grid fill but I have a slight problem with the person to be highlighted. In the grid it looks as though it ends with a single consonant but I always thought it ended with a double one.

Alwayspuzzled, Wiki confirmed for me that the single version is fine.

Hi fred108, it’s not a crossword I do, but I know that LIART is a Scottish spelling of Liard, a word for dapple-grey, and it’s Trail backwards, so perhaps your initial P is wrong?

Thank you quisling.
That looks right to me, back to the drawing board for the P.

Good morning Fred. 21 across is split 2, 2, 3, 6. If you have enough letters placed you will find it in Chambers Word Wizard.

Thank you, always puzzled. Have got 21a sorted out now.
Still struggling with 30d though which I wrongly had as PEEP

The crossing letter now give me ?EEL and the clue is slyly look up another one....which suggests REEL....leer going upwards...but I am struggling to see a definition.

Thanks everyone, you are all always so helpful to this duffer.

Reel is right. The wordplay is referencing the answer immediately before that.
