many thanks for the votes and kind comments, and bad luck to mattrom in such a close-run affair. Lots of interesting "buddy" ideas offered but I can confirm it was a reference to the generic candidate in "...can you spare a dime?"....money isn't everything after all ;-)

good job on the organising front from our own buddy - the clips were appreciated. On current evidence, there must surely be something more intelligent out there....

Sorry, Paul H. I had a period where I wasn't participating, and when I returned I explained that it's because I am transitioning. As of today, in fact, I am now legally recognized as female. You may see some forum denizens refer to me as Darla.

And now I see that I didn't thank those who voted for my clue. Shame on me. I do appreciate the votes, all.
