I have now found 39a in Chambers (at the end of the entry for the verb of its second word) but my other quandaries remain.

I would be grateful for a nudge as to where the finisher should be entered. I have the three words, the theme and bar and have completed the elimination. I know the finisher but can’t see a place to enter the six letters which still leaves real words. No doubt I am due a resounding d’oh! In due course.

Hi Jack,

I had exactly the same problem but eventually found it running top to bottom (starting in the first row) covering 6 different answers.

jack aubrey - look for what would be the first 'finisher'.

I am still undecided about where the bar should go. I assume it is across the fifth (non-highlighted) letter of the theme. As for the 'embellishments' does that simply mean a depiction in our own style of the survivor? I have looked at several pictures of that and an pondering how to represent it with my poor artistic skills.

Given the scale, some wheels, the footplate and an angular strut gives a fair impression (I think) without obscuring the letters too much.
