ChrisE and Gooner, thanks. I didn't parse it earlier, when I stuck it in my grid.

Regarding 40 Across, "Unqualified one must abandon English course",
for which I have -N-R-E (6 letters), I guess the answer is "ENTREE"?
This'll probably be ENTIRE without the one (I) + E (for English).
Only, "UNTRUE" also fits.

I took it that Entire was 'unqualified' , it loses the I/one, and then E for English is added to the end.

That's what I thought, Malone. If I was to insert "UNTRUE", I wouldn't be able to account for the "course". Thanks!

Thanks, Rocketman.

PS I tried, but I couldn't get Untrue to work with any part of the clue!

Agreed, Merry Phil, hated Asses Bridge, whatever that is, and it's long past time that setters stopped using 'appeal' to indicate the letters 'sa', a usage that doesn't exist outside crosswordland.

Can't see this:

46d Ridiculous old woman having to abandon native (7).
Looks like 'idiotic' from the crossing letters.
