Hello. My first post. Hope I'm in the right place. Feeling sheepish cos I'm asking about the (lowly?) Sun cryptic. I'm not looking for the answers, I just want to get better at doing them by understanding how the clues work.
Suffice to say I understand the concise bits of the clues, it's the cryptic bits I'm struggling with.
I usually Whatsapp my 85-y-o dad and he explains them to me, but was curious to see if I can find a forum of friendly folk willing to help me out...so here goes:

Fri Feb 4th
23a ORLANDO: Get nothing after gold in Floridian city (I knew that Orlando was in Florida so the concise clue was easy enough)
14d BRISLING: Fish skin in batter is fish (I got enough letters to work out the fish I was looking for was a "Brisling", although I'd never heard of one. But no idea how the cryptic works here)

Thurs Feb 3rd
4a HABITAT: Living space somewhat limited in Derby?
22a DRONE: Romeo in appropriate flying machine
7d TRESTLE: Fresh letters in support

Hi Kean and welcome to the Forum:-)

First thing - NEVER feel too sheepish to ask a question on here.

23a - "get nothing" = LAND O after "gold" = OR

14d - "skin in batter" = B(atte)R around IS (from the clue) + LING another fish.

14d - Sorry, B(atter)R goes before not around IS LING

7d - "fresh" indicates an anagram of "letters"

4a - "somewhat limited" = A BIT in "derby" (a) HAT

22a - I think it's just R(omeo) (as in Romeo, Foxtrot, Tango etc) inside DONE

Hi Brendan, thanks for the friendly reply! That's wonderful!
So I've learnt "Or" for gold comes from (quoting Wiki) "In heraldry, or (/ɔːʁ/; French for "gold") is the tincture of gold..."

Welcome to the Forum, Kean.

I do the Admin and keep everything on track. I've just 'bumped' two threads on Posting Guidelines and Duplicate Threads which you might like to read as they both contain useful information.

I also 'tidied up' your heading, it's nothing personal, I do that a lot to keep the page looking neat and tidy.
