20 Across - State of old Hilary, for example, on journey with back trouble (5,8)

Can you help with parsing the answer please? Looks like Outer Mongolia - of the definition is State of old, then Hilary, for example gives term, “on journey” is “on go” and back trouble gives “lia” (ail backwards). But where does the initial ou come from?

It might be that the definition is just State, with the “old” giving the o but that does not explain the u. What am I missing?

Thanks- that must be it. I must admit I hadn’t realised that Hilary teen was a peculiarly Oxford thing.
