PuzzledPom, in 13 across part 2 Paris is not the city but a prominent citizen of an ancient city. If you get the reference the wordplay should fall into place.

My error was having not pluralised the first answer. Sheer carelessness. Your tip led to the answer and retrospectively amending my mistake.

Are both entries of every clue pair to be split?

Hi vesalius, all of the entries (apart from 11a as instructed) include one of the answers without a split.

Firstly--how do setters even think of this stuff?
Secondly--I don't think I've ever seen a crossword with more potential avenues available for solving than this one!
I've almost finished...but I'm having so much fun that I don't want it to be over, so I've slowed down on purpose.
I haven't even looked at the submission page to see if there might be yet another challenge there...

Enjoyed that very much. My first Genius :-) Surprised the online submission page doesn’t include the grid fill which was a significant part of the challenge, or did I miss something?

I'm glad you enjoyed enjoyed this, it really was a lot of fun. That's a very good point you make about the online submission. I've already sent my entry in and I showed the answers as separate and following each other in the normal way, but now I'm wondering if they should've been shown cyclically, like they appear in the grid - as I say, too late now but I'll be interested to read in what manner others submitted their entries:-)
