Could someone
help me fully parse the following clues:

17 across: Preoccupation of guard after period of leave (7,2,4)
Answer: Absence of mind.

1 down: What could make hounds bay?
Answer: Hudson What's the indicator for an anagram? (6)

5 across: Attacks best or worst drink little by little (5,2)
Answer: Beats up

20 down: Joined the hunt, impressed? (6)
Answer: Chased

20. Double definition. Chased , went hunting (fox hunting)+ Chased, impressed, made an impression, embossed etc.

5 best and worst can mean beat, sup is drink little

20 - double def - to chase can mean to engrave
