Four queries re. parsing. I think I know the answers but can't quite parse them to my satisfaction.
2D) Like a chat perhaps with Gill, not the first (5) A?I?E.
If the answer is AVINE, then why have they written gill (ground ivy/vine) with a capital letter? Why, "not the first"?
5D) Age about 49, say - and still going strong (5) A?I?E. Think the answer is AG(IL)E but agile doesn't mean strong.
18A) Broadcast of Grimm's yarns (7) C?E?E?S. I think the answer is CREWELS (yarns) but I don't understand "Broadcast of Grimm's" part of the clue.
22A) English king, bloodstained, fell (5) E?R?D. I think the answer might be E+R+RED (ERRED) but erred does not mean fell.
Thank you in advance. Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree with my warped logic?

18 Crewel sounds like Cruel. grim? (Then the possessive...)

22 Fall can mean 'to lapse into sin', so Err seems reasonable.

5 D. I think it's Alive, strong. Ae, age, with LIV, Roman numerals for 49 (I think!)

LIV is 54 in Roman numerals Malone. 49 is IL (50 minus 1). Now I'm even more confused!

Trelos, thanks - and sorry about the guessed (and wrong!) Roman numerals. Was there a clue 49? Maybe it linked to that...

2d - a gill is a ravine (Chambers def. 3), so ‘not the first’ means remove the first letter.

There isn't a clue 49 Malone. I was just guessing it was age written around IL (49) which makes AGILE but I can't parse the rest of the clue which says, "say - and still going strong". The other 3 are done now. Many thanks.
