Could some kind soul help me out? I have a full grid, apart from the central cell, all 16 “misplaced” answers (and I can group them in fours). I also have 8 missing letters from the down clues which give two apparently significant words. But I am struggling with the missing letters from the across clues. In clue order I have (I think!) A P ? L Y C ? U.

Your letters are correct but the end of the instruction isn't the two words (3,5) you're thinking of.
The first word is 5 letters long (without any pairs of letters) then you need 3 letters between C and U, and 1 letter after it for the full 6 letter word (full instruction = 5,6,5 including the downs).
