13 down - "Vixen,say, is an animal (4)". the answer is "DEER", but, as always, why? I can see that "DEAR" is a term of endearment and is a homophone, but why to a female fox in particular?

Vixen is one of Santa's reindeer - just an example, say, of an animal.

And here's me in my festive Rudolph jumper! Never thought of Donner and Blitzen's colleagues, though I have to confess I'm not as familiar with the others. As always - "D'oh!" Many thanks!
